Rutting, the development of depressions or grooves in asphalt along the paths where vehicle tires repeatedly travel, typically results from either an asphalt mix that is too soft for the loads it is carrying or a base that is not providing adequate support under repeated heavy loads. Rutting is more common in areas with concentrated heavy traffic in consistent paths, such as truck routes, bus lanes, or driveways where vehicles always enter and exit along the same line. Once rutting develops, it can also create drainage issues, since water collects in the depressions rather than draining away. Addressing rutting typically requires either resurfacing with a mix and thickness appropriate for the actual loads, or in more severe cases, reconstruction of the affected area's base.
